On May 24, a popular science event Science Slam was held in Sevastopol for the third time, organized by Marine Hydrophysical Institute.

Science Slam is an international project to popularize science. The intellectual "battle" of scientists, when its participants readily and interestingly tell a wide audience about their own scientific research in 10 minutes, and the audience determines the winner with applause. Science Slam has been held in Russia since 2013 and is considered one of the most effective ways to attract the attention of the younger generation to science. Currently, more than 20 regions of the country are active participants in this project.

After two Science Slam events successfully held in Sevastopol, our region was officially included in the Science Slam Russia Association, which opens up the opportunity for our young scientists and students to speak at all-Russian Science Slam events, take part in TV programs of the Kultura Channel and in many educational projects in as popular science lecturers and speakers.

The team of Science Slam Sevastopol organizers consists of scientists and popularizers of science working at Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS.

The venue of the third scientific battle in our city was the Admiral conference room at the Sevastopol Hotel. The main organizer of the project was Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS.

For four hours, the following participants fought for the right to be called the best scientist in Sevastopol:

Anna Kuzmina — an assistant professor at the Department of History and International Relations of the Sevastopol Branch of Moscow State University
The report: “The history of champagne winemaking in Sevastopol”

Andrey Azarov — student-inventor (Sevastopol State University)
The report: "Without pain and blood" (report on the device for non-invasive determination of the level of iron in the blood)

Evgeny Medvedev - junior research assistant, Marine Hydrophysical Institute, RAS
The report: “Global warming. Myths and reality"

Daria Litvinyuk — research associate, A. O. Kovalevsky Institute of Marine Biological Research, RAS
The report: "Zooplankton is short-lived"

Andrey Bagaev — senior research associate, Marine Hydrophysical Institute, RAS
The report: "Microplastic: what is it really like? "

As a special out-of-competition speaker, Sergei Nazarov, a researcher of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of RAS, a teacher at the Quantorium, children's technology park, delivered a speech.

According to the rules of the project, the Slammer is given only 10 minutes to speak. During this time, the scientist should not only interestingly and readily tell about his scientific research, but literally fall in love with the entire audience in the field of science field he is engaged in.

Sevastopol scientists succeeded! There were no bored faces in the crowded room. Spectators tirelessly asked the Slammers questions. The authors of the best questions got prizes from sponsors and organizers. Internet viewers did not go unnoticed either. At the end of the evening, the most original question from the Internet also obtained its award.

The Event guests had the opportunity to participate in competitions, scientific experiments, test the board game "Discover the Ocean" — the author’s development of young scientists of Marine Hydrophysical Institute, take pictures with participants in a scientific duel and receive fridge magnets.

The event climax was a spectator vote for the best participant in a scientific battle. Traditionally, the winner was determined using a special device — a sound level meter that records the applause volume.

According to the vote results, Daria Litvinuk, a research associate from A.O. Kovalevsky Institute of Marine Biological Research, got main prize — the boxing gloves.
