The VIII All-Russian Scientific Conference Seas of Russia: Modern Research Methods and their Practical Applications was held on 23-27 September 2024 in Sevastopol on the basis of Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, timed to the 95th anniversary of the Institute.
The conference was held with the purpose of comprehensive discussion of modern problems of oceanology, including theoretical studies, experimental observations and numerical modelling of processes in marine systems to solve applied problems of rational use of marine resources and sustainable development of coastal regions.
During the week of work, more than 150 scientists from different regions of Russia discussed a wide range of issues of modern oceanology within the framework of three main directions: "Studies of processes in the marine environment based on contact and remote sensing methods", "Theoretical studies and numerical modelling of processes in marine systems, interdisciplinary models" and "Ecological safety of coastal and shelf zones of sea". Special attention was given to experimental studies of hydrodynamic, thermohaline, lithodynamic and biogeochemical processes, modern measurement technologies, mathematical modelling of ocean processes and the influence of climate change on the state of the marine environment.
The conference program included ceremonial events dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Institute"s foundation and a round table dedicated to the comprehensive scientific program "The southern vector of national security in the context of geopolitical and climatic challenges". The participants of the round table discussed the problems of the state of the southern seas of Russia in the conditions of geopolitical and climatic changes, monitoring of hazardous phenomena in the Sea of Azov using satellite data and implementation of the concept of sustainable development of the Sea of Azov water area in the conditions of radioactive and chemical pollution of the marine environment.
The conference included a competition for the best report among young scientists. On the final day, in addition to the three main sessions, a presentation of poster reports was held.
At the closing ceremony, Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sergey Karpovich Konovalov, presented certificates to the winners of the best poster report competition. The winners were as follows:
Section 1: Vladislav Romanovich Zhuk (FSBSI FRC MHI) with the report Influence of the dynamics of the East Siberian Current on the distribution of Pacific waters in the Chukchi Sea;
Section 2: Vsevolod Ilyich Ilyin (MSU, IO RAS) with the report Own and individual tides in the Sea of Japan;
Section 3: Igor Nikolaevich Mukoseev (FSBSI FRC MHI) with the report Measurements of рСО2 in the coastal waters of the northern part of the Black Sea during the invasion period;
Best poster report: Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Konik (IO RAS) Long-period variability of the hydrophysical regime of Lake Ladoga.
The Seas of Russia Conference once again confirmed its status as the most important platform for the exchange of experience and ideas between the country's leading oceanographers.
Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS thanks all participants, organizers and partners of the conference for the fruitful work and expresses confidence that its results will serve as a basis for new research and discoveries in the study of seas and oceans.
The conference was organized by Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Section of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the supervision of the Maritime Collegium under the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation and with the information support of the Sevastopol Branch of the Russian Geographical Society and the World Ocean Museum.
