The All-Russian School of Young Oceanologists Methods and Means of Research of Processes in the Marine Environment was held at Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 2 to 6 October 2023.

The aim of the School was to involve young scientists in the scientific and educational process, to present the results of their own research and to formulate promising tasks for the formation of a qualified scientific community in Russia, capable of conducting research on the marine environment at the world level.

The School was attended by undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of hydrometeorology, physical oceanography, marine engineering and other related fields.

During an intensive five-day program, participants had an opportunity to attend lectures by leading Russian scientists – specialists in hydrodynamics, remote sensing, operational oceanography and other related disciplines. The participants were particularly interested in practical training in satellite image interpretation, remote sensing data analysis and oceanographic data visualization.

During the school days, excursions were organized for the participants around the Bay of Sevastopol, to the Underground Sevastopol Museum, to the Museum of Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. An important part of the cultural program was the screening of the restored 1911 film The Defense of Sevastopol directed by A.A. Khanzhonkov and a meeting with the creative team of the project.

The final event of the scientific and educational program was a lecture by the founder of the School of Young Oceanologists, Scientific Director of MHI, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Konstantinovich Korotayev (lecture topic: Prospects for the development of physical oceanography in the Russian Federation).

The School of Young Oceanologists enabled its participants to expand their knowledge in the field of modern methods of physical oceanography and to acquire practical skills in the analysis of processes in the world ocean.

The VII School of Young Oceanologists was held within the Decade of Science and Technology in the Russian Federation under the authority and with the financial support of the Sevastopol Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
