The All-Russian Scientific Conference Russian Seas: From Theory to Practice of Oceanological Research was held on 25-29 September 2023 in Sevastopol at Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was dedicated to comprehensive discussion of modern problems of oceanology, problems of synthesis of theory and practice, combination of modelling concepts and experimental data in complex oceanological research for better understanding of processes occurring in marine ecosystems and rational planning of marine resources usage.

The conference was organized in the form of plenary, section and poster reports in the following areas: state and current problems of marine expeditionary research; theoretical studies of processes in marine systems; interdisciplinary models; issues of planning the development and rational use of marine resources.

Within the plenary sessions and 3 sections, 82 oral and 61 poster reports were presented. The conference was attended by 177 scientists, including 1 Academician of the RAS, 4 Corresponding Members of the RAS, 25 Doctors of Science, 59 Candidates of Science from 73 scientific and research organizations. More than 35% of the participants were students, postgraduates and young scientists.

The participants of the conference noted high scientific level of the reports and applied significance of the presented research, a great interest of the scientists in the topics of the conference and a great potential of the scientific organizations of the Russian Federation in the study of the problems of the world ocean.

According to the results of the competition for the best report among young scientists, the winners were Aleksandr Konik (IO RAS, Moscow) – the best oral report in the section Current state and actual problems of marine expeditionary research on variability of characteristics of submesoscale eddies of the Bering Sea and Kuril-Kamchatka region; Klim Grigorenko (SSC RAS, Rostov-on-Don) – the winner in the section Theoretical studies of processes in marine systems, interdisciplinary models, the topic of the report – Manifestation of seiche currents in different regions of the Sea of Azov; Evgeny Slizchenko (MHI RAS, Sevastopol) – the best report among the speakers of the section Issues of planning the development and rational use of resources of the marine environment, the topic of the report: Fluxes and distribution of 210Pb/210Po in the Black Sea. Andrey Sokolov (AARI, St. Petersburg) was awarded the best poster of the session: Heat Exchange at the Arctic Basin Boundaries.

During the closing plenary session, Sergey Karpovich Konovalov, Director of Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, congratulated all participants on the successful work and noted that the scientific level of the conference is increasing every year: We have worked very well all week and I am pleasantly surprised by the number of guests and the number of good reports presented. I think our conference is becoming more professional and interesting every year. I am sure it will continue to do so.

The conference was arranged by Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia and the Section of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the support of the Marine Board under the Government of the Russian Federation and with the information support of the Sevastopol Branch of the Russian Geographical Society and the World Ocean Museum.
