From September 27 to October 1, 2021, the Fifth All-Russian School of Young Oceanologists “Marine Expeditionary Research and Numerical Modeling” was held at the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS.
The School of Young Oceanologists is held annually on the basis of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute in order to attract young scientists and students to active participation in fundamental research. This is a unique educational project that contributes to the formation of a qualified scientific community in Russia that can conduct research in the field of forecasting changes in the marine environment at the world level. This year, 28 young scientists and students of 14 research organizations of Russia selected on a competitive basis became the School’s trainees.
The program of the School traditionally included lectures and training sessions. Leading Russian scientists and specialists in the field of marine hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry, remote sensing, operational oceanography and other related disciplines became the project’s lecturers.
For the first time, the School’s training sessions went beyond their indoor format. A trip to the Black Sea coast (mouth of the Belbek River) was organized in order to teach students how to work with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Sevastopol Bay marine expedition became the most impressive event for all participants of the project. On board the rented vessel, the aspiring researchers were taught to conduct hydrophysical and optical measurements, select and fix marine samples for subsequent hydrochemical analysis. Some training sessions on determining the concentration of biogenic elements and dissolved oxygen in marine samples were conducted in the laboratories of the Marine Biogeochemistry Department.
The Fifth All-Russian School of Young Oceanologists “Marine Expeditionary Research and Numerical Modeling” took place owing to the support of the Sevastopol City Branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
