September 23-28, 2019, All-Russian Scientific Conference “Seas of Russia: Fundamental and Applied Research”, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Marine Hydrophysical Institute, was held in Sevastopol on the basis of Marine Hydrophysical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences.

The conference was organized by Federal State Budget Scientific Institution “Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS” (FSBSI FRC MHI) and Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography Section of the Earth Sciences Division of Russian Academy of Sciences under financial support of Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

The conference was aimed at analyzing the current level of knowledge of natural processes and anthropogenic impact in the seas of Russia. During the working week, actual problems of the seas were discussed by more than 300 scientists and practitioners from 88 scientific organizations - specialists in the field of oceanology, sea physics, geography, ocean geology, biogeochemistry, marine information systems and the maritime law.

Among the conference participants were Russian and foreign research leaders in the field of oceanology and marine physics, recognized by the international community – Vice-President of Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician, Dr.Sci. (Tech.), Professor, Director of AEROCOSMOS Research Institute for Aerospace Monitoring V.G. Bondur; member of the Presidium of Russian Academy of Sciences, academician, Dr.Sci. (Geogr.), professor, scientific adviser of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of RAS, research supervisor of SSC RAS, scientific adviser of Section of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics and Geography of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, G.G. Matishov; Professor, Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) (Haifa, Israel) PhD, Isaak Gertman.

The conference was organized in the form of plenary, sectional and poster presentations in the following research areas: theoretical research and numerical modeling in oceanology; methods, means and results of interdisciplinary research of marine systems; current state and actual problems of information support of oceanology fundamental and applied problems. During the plenary and breakout sessions the conference participants listened to 151 reports, including 8 plenary ones presented by academicians, corresponding members and professors of Russian Academy of Sciences. 65 reports were presented during the poster session.

Conference participants noted high scientific level and applied value of the presented studies.

The following young scientists became the winners of the competition for the best report: research associate, Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics of SB RAS (Novosibirsk) Natalya Shmatkova (the best oral report in the section “Fundamental studies of the of marine environment formation and evolution processes”); junior research associate, Federal Research Centre, the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Rostov-on-Don) (the best oral report in the section “Applied problems of assessing and forecasting the state of marine systems and the processes of their interaction with the atmosphere”) Anastasia Magaeva; junior research associate, Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Sevastopol) (the best oral report in the section “Remote studies of processes and phenomena in the marine environment”) Valentina Rubakina. The work of senior research associate at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Nizhny Novgorod), Ph.D. (Phys.-Math.) Ivan Kapustin was awarded as the best poster presentation.

Scientific program of the conference was supplemented by a number of cultural events, during which the visiting participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the main places of interest of Sevastopol, took a walk in the evening at Chersonesus and visited the Museum of Marine Hydrophysical Institute.
