April 22-26, 2019, the 4th All-Russian Conference of Young Scientists "Comprehensive Studies of the World Ocean" (CSWO (KIMO)-2019) was held at Marine Hydrophysical Institute of RAS. This year the Conference was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of MHI. About 200 students, graduate students and young scientists, oceanologists from various research organizations in Russia took part in the event. Leading experts in the field of oceanology such as Alexander Mikaelian (Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS), Pavel Tishchenko (Pacific Oceanological Institute named after V.I. Ilyichev, FEB RAS), Alexander Ostrovskiy (Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS), Vladimir Belokopytov (Marine Hydrophysical Institute, RAS) took part as invited lecturers at KIMO – 2019.
Young scientists of MHI discussed actual problems of the ocean in the framework of an extensive scientific program developed by the conference organizers. It included lectures by leading scientists, plenary reports of young PhDs, breakout sessions, as well as a poster session in the following areas:
Every day the scientific program was supplemented by informal events aimed at bringing participants closer together and creative teamwork in a relaxed atmosphere. In the time free from the conference schedule, the participants could attend an excursion quest in Sevastopol, take part in the team game "A Look at the Oceanology of the Future", in a creative meeting devoted to underwater photography or a discussion with elements of a business game from the creators of the "Floating University of the IO RAS", listen to a lecture on amateur underwater research or try your hand at a table tennis tournament. The organizers prepared many different surprises that were supposed to leave the most pleasant memories in the memory of scientists. For example, conference participants could send historical postcards with photos of Marine Hydrophysical Institute, the Black Sea Hydrophysical Polygon and the storm basin anywhere in Russia for free.
The general sponsor and one of the most active participants in KIMO – 2019 was Fertoing LLC. For the third year in a row, Fertoing has supported this unique youth project and company employees present their scientific reports during the conference. This year, they also prepared and held a photo exhibition at Marine Hydrophysical Institute dedicated to search and historical expeditions to the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War in the Kara and Black Seas, as well as the social-cultural activities of the company in St. Petersburg and Kronstadt.
To encourage the most talented participants, the competition for the best research work was traditionally held during the conference.
