Last Friday, on April 20, the second scientific battle – Science Slam Sevastopol 2.0. was held with a great success in the “Craft Bar”. The organizers of this large-scale popular scientific event were the young scientists from Marine Hydrophysical Institute – Ekaterina Eremina, Artem Mizyuk and Elena Kubryakova.

Since the time when their idea of holding a scientific battle in Sevastopol received financial support from the city government, a continuous intensive work on its implementation began. Intensive preparation for the event lasted for almost four months and included numerous stages. At the beginning of this year a distance selection, followed by the casting of Science Slam 2.0 participants, was held. For five lucky ones who managed to get into the project, there was organized the School of Slamers where, under the guidance of actor Valery Alexandrin, the scientists gradually transformed their performances from the scientific report form into a modern stand-up format which is popular nowadays. Representatives of the slamers' team took part in TV broadcasts weekly, gave interviews to journalists of regional media, and two weeks before the event at the Marine Hydrophysical Institute project manager Ekaterina Eremina held a press conference on Science Slam 2.0 in Sevastopol.

As a result of well-coordinated and effective work of the organizers, partners and participants of the project, Science Slam 2.0 assembled a huge audience and did not disappoint their expectations. In the struggle for the title of the best slamer participated five applicants (scientists from Sevastopol scientific research institutes, graduates and students of higher educational institutions), and an employee of our institute – leading research engineer Sergei Svishchev – was among them. His report “How does the Sevastopol Bay breathe?” was received by the audience with interest, but, unfortunately, did not receive a record of applause in the evening, as well as the reports of students of the Sevastopol branch of the Moscow State University Sofya Merenkova, Niyara Nafiyeva and INTS staff member Andrei Lubkov. Victory and trophy boxing gloves went to the developer of the “Map of warm water”, SevSU graduate Vladislav Elyshev.

It should be noticed that according to the rules of the project, special guests, whose stand-ups did not take part in the competition, were invited to the event. Ivan Chuksin, the winner of the Moscow Science Slam (post-graduate student of the Faculty of Agronomy and Biotechnology: a member of the Department of Biotechnology Genetics of Selection and Seed Production of Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy, general director of OOO “VITROPLANTECH”) came to support the Sevastopol slamers. His report “What are the clones made of?” was devoted to modern biotechnology and plant cloning.

Another out-of-competition report “Fearlessness and enthusiasm in the city of science” was presented by Pavel Polikarpov, the head of Department of Popularization of Science Activity of Marine Hydrophysical Institute, and really inspired the audience, as, indeed, the very event aimed at popularizing science and the image of the scientist.
