Academic career
Sergey K. Konovalov is a well-known ocean scientist. Among his most important achievements that have received wide international recognition are the development of ideas on the formation and evolution of the biogeochemical structure of the Black Sea, the adaptation of the hydrochemical structure of the sea to anthropogenic stress and observed climate variations, the development of methods and principles of integrated coastal environment management. Dr. Konovalov is the author and co-author of more than 150 scientific papers in domestic and international publications.
These days, his scientific interests are tied up with the study of the parameterization of physical, geochemical and biogeochemical processes, the construction of conceptual and numerical models of the evolution of the hydrochemical components of the sea ecosystem, the numerical study of the role of natural processes and the anthropogenic influence on the budget of the hydrochemical components of the waters and the Black Sea assimilation potential, the anthropogenic CO2 impact assessment, estimate of the role of anthropogenic sources of biogenic element, an assessment of climate variation effect on the oxygen and hydrogen sulfide content distribution in the sea, an estimate of the conditions for sustainable development and catastrophic changes in the marine ecosystem.
Research and Organizational Activity
Sergey K. Konovalov was the head and/or responsible executor of 30 international scientific projects, as well as the co-chairman of the group of international experts on biological and chemical data (GEBICH), IODE, IOC and UNESCO.
He is a responsible member of the Scientific Expert Council of the Oceanographic Institute for the Study of the Baltic Sea, Warnemünde (Rostock), Germany; journal reviewer of Biogeosciences, Chemosphere, Deep-Sea Research, Ecological Modelling, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, Environmental Science & Technology, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Marine Systems, Limnology and Oceanography and Marine Chemistry.
For his outstanding contribution to the Black Sea environment protection, in October, 2017 Dr. Konovalov obtained the international award “Black Sea Medal -2017”.
Sergey K. Konovalov is the Member of the Academic Council of FSBSI FRC MHI and the Dissertation Council D 900.010.01, specialty 25.00.28 Oceanology, geographical sciences; the chief editor of Morskoy Gidrofizicheskiy Zhurnal; the member of the editorial boards of the collection of scientific papers Ecological Safety of Coastal and Shelf Zones of Sea and Morskoy Ekologicheskiy Zhurnal.
Two PhD theses were defended under his scientific supervision.
