About Arkadiy Kolesnikov

Arkadiy Georgievich Kolesnikov was one of the leading marine physicists, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Laureate of State Prizes of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR. He recreated the Marine Hydrophysical Institute in Sevastopol after its relocation from Moscow and became its director.

Under the leadership of A. G. Kolesnikov, at the Institute a new scientific and technical direction was created: namely, marine scientific device engineering, (в английском прямой порядок слов) experimental and theoretical studies of tropical Atlantic current systems were carried out. The studies won State awards of the USSR in 1970 and those of the Ukrainian SSR in 1979. Automated complexes and instruments significantly increased the efficiency of the expeditions. For the first time in ocean research, computing machineries were used on boardships. By 1968, construction of the Lomonosov current theory was basically completed, in 1964-1979, the Marine Hydrophysical Institute published summary monographs on the tropical Atlantic current systems and equatorial counter currents of the World Ocean.
