Academic Adviser of MHI

Professor Gennady Korotaev is the academic adviser of FSBSI MHI, a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics.

Biographical notes

Academic degree: Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1981).

Academic title: Senior Research Associate (1982), Professor (1992), Corresponding Member of NASU (2009).

Education: Lomonosov Moscow State University

State awards: the State Prize of Ukraine in science and technology (2005), the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in science and technology (2007)

Awards for individual scientific and organizational achievements: was awarded a Certificate of Honor and a commemorative token for his services to the hero-city Sevastopol.

Scientific and organizational activity

Within the framework of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Gennady Korotaev guided a number of such programs, as Satellite Oceanology, Probing and Methodology. In 1987 – 1997 he was a head of Remote Sensing of the Ocean within the Working Party of the USSR Academy of Sciences ­­– NASA (USA) Earth Sciences, was a responsible executive of NASA’s CIVIFS and Symbiosis projects, a joint project of NASA, DLR (Germany), RAS (Russian Federation) and NAS of Ukraine MOZ-NATURE, the ADEOS project launched by NASDA (Japan). In 1997 – 2005, Gennady Korotaev was a responsible executive of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Space Agency of France (CNES) projects, aimed at the integrated use of the European Space Agency ENVISAT data for research and monitoring of the Black Sea dynamics and ecosystem. In association with the specialists from the Washington University (USA) and the Institute of Marine Sciences (Turkey) and under the financial support of the European Branch of Marine Research Office (USA), he is a co-supervisor of the program for the use of buoy-profilers in the Black Sea. This program provides the possibility to carry out regular operational observations of the sea water temperature and salinity profiles on the basis of the latest technology.

Gennady Korotaev is the National Coordinator and a member of the Steering Committee of the Вlасk Sеа GООS program, established under the auspices of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to coordinate efforts of the countries of the region to create the Black Sea observation system. In 1999 – 2007 he was the Steering Committee member and a responsible executive of NATO Science for Peace Program, recently –the Steering Committee member and Scientific Project Manager of the 5th, 6thand 7th Framework Programs of the European Commission ARENA, ASKABOS, EKUP, SYMBIOSIS and My Ocean.

Gennady Korotaev is the head of Academic Board of FSBFI MHI, a member of the editorial boards of Physical Oceanography, Geoinformatika and Issledovaniya Zemli iz Kosmosa (RAS).

Gennady Korotaev carries out an active training of scientific specialists, enjoys the well-deserved authority and respect of the MHI employees and is also respected in the international scientific community. The members of his scientific team defended more than 16 candidate and 5 doctoral theses.
